DBB River Mud Log

1/11/2013 NOR filed with ADEM. See: ADEM NOR.pdf. I assume this is more or less when this project began.

6/7/2014 I took my first set of pictures of the site after noticing unusually high amounts of mud in the river after a recent rain. This was the first time that I had been on the site, and all of my pictures were of discharge point 3 (see this map: Site Map) because I did not know the other two existed at that time. Not long after taking these pics, I shared them with Alex. Here is the link to my pictures: DBB Pics.

8/14/2014 - Date on which Shaun takes his second set of measurements at confluence of Big Branch and the Little Cahaba. See the 60 day notice for the source of this information.

8/19/2014: Strong rain early that morning; heavy storms; lots of lightning; we can remember it because it woke us all up around 4:00 or so when it came through.

8/19/2014: Go here for pictures that Shaun Crawford took on the same day of the confluence of Big Branch with the Little Cahaba; it dramatically shows the amount of mud flowing into the river mud below Big Branch, and clear water about Big Branch. Shaun Crawford's Pics

8/20/2014: DBB email to Don Harrison

8/21/2014: Site visit with Chuck Williams, Don, and Joey Ammonds (general counsel). Notes from site visit at Meeting Notes

8/22/2014: My email to Don Harrison

8/25/2014: Email from Chuck Williams to me with pictures of another reclamation project he did. Chuck is incorrect when he says that his site was not the source of the turbidity on August 20. Chuck bases his conclusion on Terry's observation that the no mud was running off the site on 8/20. But as I had already pointed out the Water Board closes the Lake Purdy dam after a heavy rain. This severely restricts the river flow, leaving the runoff from the previous day in essentially the same place.

8/31/2014 6:59:05 AM: Pretty good rain last night; some storms.

8/31/2014: My email to Chuck:

8/31/2014: Another email from me to Chuck:

8/31/2014 4:06:33 PM: My notes from walking with Charlie

Charlie and I did some walking today. We drove up to the Lake Purdy gate, parked, and walked in to the "underwater bridge." The water was slightly turbid, but that was all. The water was not muddy nothing like it was on our property. So we did not go up to the site, but walked along the river from the underwater bridge to our property expecting to find some new confluence that was dumping mud into the river. To our surprise, we found none. The water simply got gradually muddier until it reached the pronounced levels on our property. What could account for this? It is possible that the discharge of mud from the site has a distinct endpoint (i.e., when the heavy rains stop), leaving the mud to run down the river in sort of a block. Also, the water board closes the Lake Purdy dam after a heavy rain. When they do this not only does the level of the river drop significantly but also the river stops flowing. At whatever point the discharge may be along the river at that time is where the mud will settle and stay until the water board reopens the dam and reestablishes flow in the river. This could explain why we can see muddy water at our location along the river while at the same time there can be much clearer water upstream near the underwater bridge. There may be other explanations for what Charlie and I observed today. I just don't know what they may be.

9/4/2014 3:41:54 PM: Email from Chuck Williams yesterday

9/4/2014 3:48:26 PM: Rainfall last night of a little under one inch

Note the 0.97 near the area where the reclamation work is being done. Not much rain.

9/4/2014 3:50:30 PM: My response this morning to Chuck:

9/09/2014: My email to Chuck

The attachment about Carbaryl: DBB Carbaryl - Sevin - Research

9/11/2014 7:02:43 AM: Spoke yesterday afternoon with Don and Chuck asked them pretty forcefully (for me) to have testing for Sevin down after a rain at the confluence of Big Branch and Little Cahaba and at a second spot somewhat upstream from us. Good discussion they will consider it and get back to me I suggested they get in touch with the flakey environmental subcontractor that Beatty had hired and get them involved.

9/15/2014 1:54:52 PM: Tc with Don; they are meeting tomorrow to discuss my request for testing the water, among other things.

9/15/2014 3:28:43 PM: Heavy rain coming down now for about the last 10 minutes as I write this.

9/17/2014 1:50:40 PM: Called Don about their decision

9/20/2014 5:00:40 AM: Voice mail message for Don Harrison around 5:00 pm yesterday they are not willing to test the water as I have suggested.

9/24/2014 3:02:06 PM: Tc with Don Harrison; he will not give me the real reasons they won't test best I can tell is that they just don't want to because they have never done this. He did say that the last of the Sevin was put down last Thursday (today is Wed), and that the are done. They will not be putting any more down. Don told me in this conversation about the lawsuit that ADEM has filed.

9/24/2014 3:14:49 PM: called Schuyler Espy (334) 271-7855

10/14/2014 7:07:23 AM: 2" of rain last night. Here is what this morning's paper says: Rain 10-14-14\Rain 10-13 and 10-14.doc. Charlie is going to take pictures at the site today and below the confluence of Big Branch and the Little Cahaba. 10/15/2014 4:46:29 AM: Here are the pix that I took yesterday morning: DBB Behind House on 10/14/14. For contrast, here are some pictures that I have taken over the years showing the River in its normal beauty. With the exception of 018 and 019, they were all taken behind my house. 6:52:59 AM: River is quite muddy. Water level is low (per the Water Board's procedure of closing the dam after a heavy rain storm), and there is little downstream movement.

8:30:23 AM: Have just been out to examine the situation more closely and take picture. Go here for pictures: Rain Event 11-16-14 to 11-17-14\Pix from LCLC Land. Water is higher and flowing more rapidly than earlier this morning looks like the river may be clearing itself out some. Also, although the amount of mud is serious, I have seen it muddier since I started documenting mud flow in this website. At least that's the way it seems at this point.

11/18/2014: Some updates . . .

It appears that we had approximately 5 to 5.5 inches of rain during this event. See Rain Event 11-16-14 to 11-17-14\Rainfall Amounts\Rainfall NWS 11-17-14.png and Rain Event 11-16-14 to 11-17-14\Rainfall Amounts\Rainfall Cocorahs 11-17-14.png.

Go here for pictures of runoff from the settling ponds yesterday. These pictures were taken around noon by my nephew Charlie. They show that the settling ponds (in particular the west pool) failed to stop the runoff.

December 24, 2014, Rain Event (Between 2.2 and 2.5 inches)

I did not take pictures for this rain event.  Christmas Eve.  River was moderately muddy behind our house.  Cleared up for the most part after 24 more hours.

December 28, 2014, Rain Event (Between 3.2 and 3.3 inches)

It is 12/29/2014 at 6:55:43 AM as I write this.

Yesterday the river was gushing (I don't think this is too strong a word) all day.  Go here for a video taken from behind our house yesterday morning (be patient, this is a large video file and may take time to open on your system):  Rain Event 12-28-14/VID_20141228_083239937.mp4.  I just downloaded the rainfall totals at Lake Purdy (or close to it) for the 27th and 28th.  They show that Lake Purdy had between 3.2 and 3.3 inches of for this rain event.  Go here for the rainfall total files:

Rain Event 12-28-14/CoCoRaHS Rain Totals for 12-28-14.jpg

Rain Event 12-28-14/NWS Rain Totals for 12-27-14.jpg

One may reasonably ask how 3.3 inches of rain at Lake Purdy could produce so much water coming down the Little Cahaba.  The likely answer, I suppose, is that the flow down the river is also determined by how much rain is received upstream from Lake Purdy.  This may indicate that large amounts of rain fell upstream of Lake Purdy during this rain event.  In any event, I think it is safe to say that the river held up admirably well during this rain event.  To what that is attributable is at present unknown.

January 02-04, 2015, Rain Event

I write this as of 1/4/2015 at 9:36:06 AM

Don't have rainfall totals yet for the last 24 hours (we got a lot of rain yesterday and last night).  Here is a recent forecast and flood alert:

In any event, the river looks quite good.

Update on rainfall totals.  I write this as of: 1/10/2015 at 6:54:34 AM.  Go here for rainfall totals as of January 4, 2015.

2/2/2015 at 8:40:36 AM: Just an update to let my vast readership know that this page is still active.  There have been no serious rain showers or storms since January 4.

2/25/2015 at 11:09:38 AM: For the last five days we have had a steady, but not overwhelming, rain.  By my calcuations, the amount of rainfall from Feb. 21 to Feb. 25 has been 2.01 inches (see the png files below).  The river has been clean the last 4 or 5 days.  There has been no mud runoff that I can detect.

Go here for rainfall amounts for the last 5 days:

Rain Event 02-21-15 to 02-25-15/Rainfall Ending 02-25-15.png

3/11/2015 at 11:47:37 AM: The river is up and looks great today.  Here is a video that I just made.  As before, be patient.  The video is a large file and will take a while to load.  I'll update with rainfall totals later. Rain Event 03-11-15/VID_20150311_110224035.mp4.

4/2/2015 at 4:59:03 PM: I am doing two things this afternoon.

First, I note that we have had several heavy showers and thunderstorms today, which have left the river quite full - and showing some sediment.  Here is a video that I took earlier in the afternoon: Rain Event 04-02-15/VID_20150402_151239336.mp4

Second, here are the rainfall totals for the last 30 days: Rain Event 04-02-15/30 Day Rain Total as of 04-02-15.jpg.  The graphic shows that the Lake Purdy area received between 4.0" and 5.0" of rain during this period.  During this same period of time there have been no major episodes of mud coming down the river.

4/3/2015 at 8:25:35 AM: Had one or two gullywashers yesterday afternoon and early evening.  Here is the river this morning.  It is holding up well.  Rain Event 04-02-15/Little Cahaba Morning of 04-03-15.mp4.

4/13/2015 at 7:16:08 AM: It looks like this week will be a test of the mine site's ability to prevent mud from running into the river.  Go here for a copy of this morning's forecast discussion from NOAA:  Rain Event Week of Mon 4-13-15/NOAA Forecast Discussion of 4-13-15.txt.

4/18/2015 at 7:50:17 AM

We have had a lot of rain this week.  For the 24 hour period ending on the morning of April 14 (Tues) we had 2.02 inches (see Rain Event Week of Mon 4-13-15/Lake Purdy Rainfall 4-14-15 at 7am.png) and for the 24 hour period ending on the morning of  April 17 (Fri) we had 2.00 inches (see Rain Event Week of Mon 4-13-15/Lake Purdy Rainfall 4-17-15 at 7am.png).  Over 4 inches of rain in four days a gracious plenty.

Here is a video that I took on the morning of April 14 at the end of that 24 hour period of rain: Rain Event Week of Mon 4-13-15/River 4-14-15 at 9_22 am.mp4.  The river holds up well in this video.

Here are four videos that I took on Thusday the 16th during the course of the second large event of the week.

Rain Event Week of Mon 4-13-15/River 4-16-15 at 2_52 pm.mp4

Rain Event Week of Mon 4-13-15/River 4-16-15 at 3_03 pm.mp4

Rain Event Week of Mon 4-13-15/River 4-16-15 at 3_04 pm.mp4

Rain Event Week of Mon 4-13-15/River 4-16-15 at 4_09 pm.mp4

Clearly, the river is in distress in these videos.  Muddy water is coming into the river from sources upstream as well as sources that I can see (and that are recorded in these videos).  By the next day, Friday morning, the river looked much better, and it is fine now.

4/21/2015 at 3:35:50 PM: Here are some pictures that John Blair took at the mine site in the early evening on April the 16th (around 6:00 pm).  They show that the East retaining pool failed to hold back runoff from the rain we received earlier that day.  Whether or not the runoff from the mine site was resonsible for all of the mud that came down the river on the 16th is hard for me to know.  But it is clear that the discharge on the 16th was a violation by the Ala. Department of Labor of its legal obligation to protect the Little Cahaba River from the consequences of runoff from the site.
